Structure tells a child what to do next. Feedback tells them whether they did it right, and why. The last article in this series covered how adaptive platforms replace the sequencing and pacing work a school timetable normally does for free. This one is about the second gap, quieter but just as significant: marking.
In a classroom, a child's work gets checked, corrected, and explained, usually within the same lesson. At home, without a second qualified adult in the room, that loop can break down, not from lack of effort, but from lack of time and, for many subjects, lack of the specific expertise marking well actually requires.
Why marking is harder than it looks
Marking a maths answer as right or wrong is straightforward enough. Explaining why a wrong answer is wrong, in a way that helps a child avoid the same mistake next time, is a different skill. It's the difference between "that's incorrect" and "you added before multiplying, try the multiplication first." One tells a child they failed. The other tells them what to do differently.
For subjects like creative writing, it gets harder still. There is no single correct answer to mark against, only judgement about structure, vocabulary, technique, and whether the piece does what it set out to do. That kind of judgement is something examiners and teachers build up over years of marking real children's work against real mark schemes. It is not reasonable to expect a parent, however well-educated and capable, to replicate it from scratch, on top of everything else home education already asks of them.
This is not a criticism of home-educating parents. It is an observation about what the job actually requires, and what any one person can reasonably hold.
What the timing of feedback actually does
The single biggest structural advantage a classroom has over a workbook is not the teacher's knowledge. It is speed. A child gets something wrong, and within minutes, sometimes seconds, they find out what went wrong and get an explanation while the attempt is still live in their memory. A workbook marked at the end of the week loses that entirely.
By the time the correction arrives, the child has usually forgotten what they were thinking when they made the mistake. The feedback lands on empty ground. It might register intellectually, but it cannot do what timely feedback does: interrupt the wrong approach before it gets practised again, while the specific reasoning behind that wrong approach is still accessible.
This is not a theory about how children learn. It is one of the more consistently replicated findings in formative assessment research: feedback works when it arrives while the learner can still act on it. Delay the feedback, and most of the value disappears.
Digital tools that mark and explain in real time restore that window. A child gets a wrong answer, sees why it's wrong, and tries an adjusted version of the same problem while it is still fresh, not a week later when the moment has gone.
Where AI marking earns its place
AI marking earns its place in exactly one situation: work that a static answer key cannot assess. For right-or-wrong questions, a standard key works fine and needs no improvement. The limitation shows up with open-ended work: creative writing, extended maths reasoning, verbal reasoning questions with multiple valid approaches. In those cases there is no single correct answer and meaningful feedback requires assessing against criteria, not just checking against a known output.
A well-built AI marking tool can assess that kind of work against the same criteria an examiner uses: composition, vocabulary range, sentence structure, technical accuracy, whether the piece achieves what it set out to achieve. It can explain the reasoning behind the mark in language a child can actually use. And it can do this immediately, consistently, every single time, without the quality varying based on how tired someone is at the end of the day.
That does not make it a replacement for a teacher's full judgement about a child. It makes it a replacement for the thing that was genuinely absent: consistent, immediate, criteria-based feedback on work that has no clean right-or-wrong answer. For home educators without a subject specialist available, that is the specific gap it fills.
The parent's role does not shrink, it changes
None of this removes parents from the process. If anything, it frees them for the parts only a parent can do: noticing when a child is struggling before the frustration tips over, deciding when to push and when to ease off, knowing that a particular topic needs a different explanation because they know how their child thinks. Those judgements require knowing a specific child well. A marking tool cannot make them.
The marking itself, the "here is specifically what went wrong and why, referenced against the criteria," is a technical job with a technical answer. It can be handed to a tool built specifically for it. The teaching relationship, the attunement, the moment-to-moment calibration of how a child is actually doing, cannot be.
That is the real trade home-educating families make when they bring in a well-built ed-tech tool. Not less involvement. Less of the part of the job that was never really about parenting in the first place.
What to look for in a marking tool
Not all AI marking is the same. For home-educating families, especially those preparing a child for the 11+, the questions worth asking before relying on any tool are:
- Does it explain, or just score? A score tells a child where they are. An explanation tells them what to do next. Only the second one closes the feedback loop.
- Is it marking against actual examiner criteria? AI that applies generic "good writing" standards is not the same as AI trained on the specific criteria used by 11+ examiners. The difference shows up in the usefulness of the feedback for exam preparation.
- Does it work for the subjects where your child actually has gaps? Real-time right-or-wrong feedback on multiple choice is widely available. Meaningful feedback on creative writing or extended reasoning is harder to find and worth more when you find it.
