When you pull a child out of school, three things disappear alongside the timetable: a teacher who knows what Year 4 should look like by July, a sequence of topics built to scaffold on each other, and a termly report that tells you whether any of it is working.

The last piece looked at what UK law actually requires from a home education, and how little of it is spelled out: no fixed curriculum, no fixed pace, no fixed benchmark. That freedom is the reason many families chose this path. It's also the reason so many spend their first term unsure whether they're covering the right ground, moving at the right speed, or actually making progress.

This is the gap ed-tech was built to fill. Not by replacing the parent, but by taking on the parts that were never really a parenting job in the first place: sequencing content, tracking what's been mastered, and adjusting pace.

The three jobs a school timetable quietly does

In a classroom, a lot of structural work happens without anyone naming it. A teacher knows roughly what a Year 4 child should be able to do by the end of the year. They know which topics build on which. They know, from watching thirty children work through the same material, roughly how long each concept takes to stick.

Pull a child out of that setting and all three jobs (sequencing, pacing, benchmarking) fall to the parent. You don't need a teaching qualification to do them badly. To do them well, you need either training or access to a large amount of comparative data that most individual parents have never had.

Diagnostic assessment: knowing where to actually start

The first job a well-built adaptive platform does is work out where a child actually is, not where their year group suggests they should be. A short diagnostic across core topic areas (number operations, fractions, reading comprehension, grammar) identifies gaps and strengths before a single minute goes on content.

This matters more for home-educated children than almost anyone else, because there's no previous school report to work from. Without a diagnostic, a parent starting Year 5 content with a child who has a gap in Year 3 fractions may not find out for months. A diagnostic catches it on day one. It also catches the opposite: a child who has already mastered what their peers are working through, who would otherwise spend weeks on revision they don't need.

Adaptive sequencing: replacing the "what's next" decision

Once a starting point is established, the platform decides what comes next. Get a topic right consistently, and the system moves on or increases difficulty. Get it wrong, and it steps back to foundational practice (typically working the gap for several sessions) before returning to the original concept.

This is what a good tutor does by ear, made systematic. The parent doesn't need to make a curriculum-design decision before breakfast.

For families without a curriculum handed to them, that removes the single most time-consuming decision in home education: what do we actually do today.

Mastery tracking: the benchmark nobody else is providing

The third job, and the one home-educating families feel most acutely, is knowing whether a child is actually progressing. In school, this comes from termly reports, teacher observation, and comparison against a class cohort.

At home, without those reference points, progress is genuinely hard to see week to week. A child who is working hard and improving slowly looks, from the inside, a lot like a child who is stuck.

A platform that tracks mastery topic by topic and reports it back in plain language (secure in number bonds, working on long division, gap in equivalent fractions) gives home-educating parents something close to that termly report, except updated after every session rather than three times a year. It doesn't replace a parent's judgement about their own child. It gives that judgement something concrete to work from.

What this doesn't replace

None of this replaces the teaching relationship: the conversation, the encouragement, the moments where a parent explains something a different way because they know exactly how their own child thinks. A platform can track whether a concept has been mastered. It can't tell you that your child freezes under timed pressure, or that they'll try harder for a handwritten note than for a badge.

What ed-tech replaces is the invisible scaffolding a school timetable provides by default: a known starting point, a logical sequence of next steps, and a record that shows whether it's working.

For home-educating families without that scaffolding, those are not small things to hand back.
